Description versus moral prescription

Concept

A claim about what occurs does not alone establish what ought to be done.

Explanation or usage

A moral conclusion requires normative premises, not just a description of nature or history. An analogy can raise a question, but its evidence and ethical reasoning still need to be examined. Calling an institution or behavior natural does not, by itself, justify it.

Common misunderstandings

If a behavior occurs in nature, it must be ethically desirable.
