Message boundaries
ConceptA receiver needs to identify where units of a message begin and end.
Explanation or usage
A sequence of symbols can have more than one grouping unless a coding scheme supplies a rule for boundaries. Timing gaps, separators, fixed lengths, or suitable code structures can make decoding unambiguous. Distinguishing signal values is therefore different from distinguishing complete characters.
Common misunderstandings
Two distinguishable signal values alone guarantee unambiguous messages.
