Autotelic experience
VocabularyAn autotelic experience is rewarding for the activity itself rather than only for an external payoff.
Explanation or usage
A person may still receive money, recognition or other benefits. The distinction concerns why the activity is experienced as worth doing. Intrinsic reward does not by itself guarantee skill, morality or the absence of effort.
Common misunderstandings
An activity cannot be intrinsically rewarding if anyone is paid to do it.
