Reciprocal concessions

Concept

A reduced request can be treated as a concession that invites a concession in return.

Explanation or usage

After an initial request is refused, a smaller one may seem like a compromise by the requester. The recipient can then feel pressure to compromise as well. This mechanism differs from merely being able to afford the smaller request, and does not guarantee acceptance.

Common misunderstandings

Every sequence of large and small requests is guaranteed to work.

Rejection-then-retreat is an illustrative application of reciprocity: after an initial request is declined, the requester makes a smaller request, which can be perceived as a concession and encourage a reciprocal concession.
