Systematic doubt

Concept

A philosophical method tests beliefs by asking whether grounds for doubt can be found.

Explanation or usage

Systematic doubt suspends acceptance of a claim to investigate its justification. One can distinguish doubting that an external object exists from the fact that an experience is occurring. Methodical questioning does not assert that every doubtful proposition must be false.

Common misunderstandings

If a belief can be doubted, its opposite has been proved.
