Elliptical orbit

Concept

In an ideal bound two-body Kepler orbit, the path is an ellipse with the attracting body at one focus in the usual relative-coordinate description.

Explanation or usage

An ellipse has two foci; its center is not generally a focus. A circle is the special case of zero eccentricity. Additional bodies and other effects can perturb the ideal orbit, so the model’s assumptions matter.

Common misunderstandings

The Sun must be at the geometric center of every planetary ellipse.

Use this as a general connection to Kepler’s development of orbital models: observations favored ellipses over preferred circles, while distinguishing an ideal two-body model from exact multi-body motion.

In the classical fixed-Sun approximation for a planet’s elliptical orbit, where is the Sun relative to the ellipse? A preferred circular model consistently misses reliable measurements, while an elliptical model predicts them better. What is the stronger scientific response?
